The Direzione musei del Friuli Venezia Giulia supervises the activity of Museo Paleocristiano di Aquileia.
Museo Paleocristiano di Aquileia is a very suggestive museum, with some peculiar characteristics. Its organization perfectly combines the ideas of ‘museum’ and ‘archaeological area’. In fact, the building where the museum is located nowadays is the result of the renovation works of the last 15 years. The renovation works have restored the original site of one of the early Christian basilicas of Aquileia. This basilica’s area had been profoundly transformed during the centuries, becoming a Benedictine monastery first, and then a wine canteen.
The building has been a museum only since 1961. There, visitors can admire the original ruins of the basilica and its polychrome mosaics, but there are also collected mosaics from another early Christian basilica – Fondo Tullio alla Beligna’s one –, other Aquileian mosaics and the museum’s entire collection of Christian epigraphs.
